Jameston Community Benefit?

Jameston Village Mission Hall and alternate use for housing development.

Concern has been voiced throughout Jameston about the village association and its promotion that over £425,000 be spent on the upgrading and extending of the old Mission Room in the village. Many in the community regard this to be an extravagant waste of public money when two halls in the parish are available for the use of the community, one at the Skrinkle Youth Hostel ( funded by the community charge ) and the other the Church Hall. Many residents feel that the area should be used for the building of houses to rent and low cost starter homes that could be purchased by local residents within the parish as both are desperately needed in the community. Over the last few years the only development that has been allowed in the parish has been a development on the local estate. The houses built there are now fetching over £200,000 a price that is beyond the reach of the majority of local people within the parish and especially the younger generation.

A petition has been raised and presented to County Councillor Malcolm Calver to consult with various bodies responsible for the concerns of local residents about the lack of land for future development within the parish. Councillor Calver who is sympathetic to the plight of single people, young families as well as the retiring generation, has written to the local church body concerning this issue but to date had not received any comments from them on the proposal.
