St. Florence Notebook - Community Council Meeting
- 13th November 2006

The St. Florence Community Council met on Monday 13th November and councillor David Griffiths highlighted the problem of hooliganism and damage to property at Longstone in St Florence. He informed the council of the reoccurring problem of unruly behaviour on the Longstone estate by some youths from the estate and from their mates from other parts of the village. He mentioned examples such as a hedge which had been carefully tended by the homeowner for twenty years that had been damaged beyond repair as well as electric lights and cars having been damaged. He quoted the example of his own car and of being abused when he had asked the child responsible to remove themselves from on top of the vehicle only to receive a torrent of abuse. He also mentioned the example of a fence which the local County Councillor Malcolm Calver had arranged to be erected recently having been vandalised .Councillor Griffiths said he was concerned that some of the residents were afraid to report the matter because of the fear of likely intimidation.

During the discussion which followed many councillors felt that the failure of schools to discipline children and the attitude of parents of unruly youths were to blame and it seemed that nothing could be done. Councillor Griffiths informed the council he had sought advice from a friend in the police force and was advised not to attempt to personally intervene when confronted by unruly behaviour but to contact the police as he could be accused of harassment. He further suggested that perhaps it would be appropriate for two councillors to carry out a survey of the views of the residents as to these problems. It was finally decided that the police would be informed of the problem and be asked to carry out random visits to the area.
